MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- For the second time in two weeks, the Covenant volleyball team swept Huntingdon and LaGrange in USA South action. The Lady Scots were 26-24, 25-19, 25-15 winners over LaGrange in Saturday's first match and 25-9, 25-17, 25-22 victors over Huntingdon in the final match in Montgomery.
The victories make it three in a row for the Lady Scots and five in a row in conference play. Covenant is 7-8 overall and 5-1 in the USA South.
MATCH ONE: Covenant 3, LaGrange 0
Ginny Moore had 15 kills and 18 digs to lead the way as Covenant held off LaGrange in three sets.
Schuyler Moore added 32 assists and 10 digs to go along with four kills, while Chelsea VanDyk tallied eight kills, four digs and five total blocks in the victory. Ariana Buchanan led Covenant with 20 digs. Olivia Becker chipped in six kills and five digs and Morgan Opgenorth tallied five kills and four total blocks.
Covenant had to use a late rally in the first set to avoid falling behind in the match. Down 24-20, the Lady Scots scored the final six points to get the 26-24 victory. Schuyler Moore and Ginny Moore had a kill apiece during the final run and Hannah Stewart's ace completed the comeback.
The second set was also tightly contested, but Covenant was able to stave off a LaGrange victory using 15 kills as a team in the set. The Lady Scots broke away from the Panthers early on in the third set and kept a comfortable lead throughout to secure the three-set victory.
Covenant had a 43-24 edge in kills and 80-68 in digs. The Lady Scots also served up five aces, while LaGrange had none.
Lexi Hall and Danyelle Carr had six kills each to lead LaGrange (8-10, 1-5 USA South). Lauren Sanders tallied 12 assists, while Aspen Coggins led the Panthers with 18 digs.
MATCH TWO: Covenant 3, Huntingdon 0
Ginny Moore tallied 15 kills for the second time and also recorded 12 digs as Covenant completed a 2-0 day with a sweep of quad-match host Huntingdon.
The double-double for Moore was her 11th of the year and fourth straight. Schuyler Moore registered 27 assists, seven kills and six digs in the win. VanDyk added seven kills, six digs and six total blocks, while Jessica Seehorn had five kills. Stewart produced a season-high 14 digs to lead Covenant defensively.
The first set was dominated by the Lady Scots. Covenant hit .258 as a team in the frame with 10 kills, while Huntingdon made eight attack errors. The Lady Scots jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the set after a Ginny Moore ace and never looked back.
Covenant trailed just once in the second set as Huntingdon took an early 3-2 lead, but the Lady Scots would lead for the majority of the game to take a 2-0 match lead. A Seehorn kill ended a late Huntingdon rally and gave Covenant the 25-17 win.
Huntingdon wouldn't go away quietly as the Hawks tied the score at 22 in the third set. Covenant answered by taking the final three points with a pair of kills from Ginny Moore followed by an attack error on Huntingdon that ended the match.
Audrianna Hargitt led Huntingdon (6-13, 0-6 USA South) with nine kills. Bria Rochelle and Lexi Rangel each had 14 digs.
Covenant travels to Birmingham Southern for a non-conference match on Wednesday. First serve is set for 7 p.m. EDT.
