LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant volleyball team used 16 kills and 10 digs from Ginny Moore and a third set rally to defeat visiting Sewanee 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 26-24) on Tuesday night inside Barnes Physical Education Center.
The win moves Covenant to 5-8 overall and a perfect 4-0 at home on the year. The Lady Scots also secured a season sweep of the Tigers with the victory. Sewanee drops to 9-6 overall.
Moore led all players with her 16 kills and picked up her ninth double-double of the year with 10 digs. Chelsea VanDyk, the reigning USA South Player of the Week, tallied 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .364. VanDyk also had four digs and two total blocks. Schuyler Moore recorded 32 assists, four kills and four digs, while Ariana Buchanan, the USA South's Defensive Player of the Week, registered 20 digs.
Covenant broke open a close first set with an 8-2 scoring run, highlighted by a pair of Jessica Seehorn kills, to go ahead 14-8. Covenant led 19-13 before a Sewanee rally cut the margin to 20-17. The Lady Scots responded well picking up five of the final seven points, capped by a VanDyk kill, to end the set.
The second set was all Covenant. The Lady Scots used 15 kills and a team hitting percentage of .323 to run away with a 25-10 game win and a 2-0 match lead.
Sewanee came out of the gate to a 9-2 lead in the third set, but again Covenant had the answer. The Lady Scots chipped away at the deficit before catching up at 22-22 after a Schuyler Moore kill. After the teams traded points, Covenant earned the final three points with two Sewanee errors and another Schuyler Moore kill to end the match.
Walker Buxton had six kills and 15 assists for the Tigers, while Sara Jayne Sutton produced 11 digs in the loss.
Covenant will get back into USA South play on Saturday with a quad-match at Huntingdon. The Lady Scots face LaGrange at noon EDT then Huntingdon at 4 p.m. EDT.
