FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Covenant volleyball senior Chelsea VanDyk was named USA South Player of the Week and freshman Ariana Buchanan was the conference's Defensive Player of the Week, announced the league on Monday.
The duo are two of four Covenant student-athletes to earn USA South weekly honors. It is the first time since Sept. 9, 2013 that the volleyball program has had two players earn USA South honors in the same week.
VanDyk, a senior from Manhattan, Mont., put together one of the best weeks for a middle hitter in recent Covenant history. VanDyk tallied 4.82 kills per set (53 total) and a hitting percentage of .588. She had 15 kills and a .609 percentage in a 3-0 win over Piedmont on Wednesday. VanDyk then had 17 kills and a .615 hitting percentage with five total blocks in a 3-1 loss to No. 21 Berry before accumulating 21 kills and a .556 percentage in a 3-1 loss at Centre. This is the fourth player of the week honor from the USA South in VanDyk's career.
Buchanan, a freshman libero from Decatur, Texas, registered 5.0 digs per set and 1.09 assists per set on the week. In a 3-0 win over Piedmont, Buchanan tallied nine digs and four assists. In a 3-1 loss to 21st-ranked Berry, she posted 23 digs, four assists and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-1 loss at Centre, Buchanan contributed 23 digs and four assists.
Covenant hosts Sewanee on Tuesday at 7 p.m. inside Barnes Physical Education Center.
