MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant volleyball team nearly ended an impressive streak on Thursday night at Maryville, but the visiting Lady Scots could not hold on to a fifth set lead and fell to the two-time defending conference champion Scots 3-2 at Boydson Baird Gymnasium.

Set scores were 25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 16-25, 15-12.

Covenant falls to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in USA South play with the loss. The loss also marks the fourth time this season that the Lady Scots have dropped a five-set contest.

Maryville, which has not lost a conference match in the regular season or tournament since 2012, goes to 2-6 on the year and 1-0 in conference play.

Schuyler Moore tallied 46 assists, 15 digs and nine kills, with a hitting percentage of .471, to lead the way for Covenant while Ginny Moore registered 23 kills and 14 digs. Chelsea VanDyk added 12 kills, six digs and five total blocks in the defeat. Ariana Buchanan had a team-high 18 digs.

The first two set were tightly played, but Maryville came out on top in both by identical 25-23 scores. In the first set, Maryville broke a 20-20 tie with two straight points and claimed the set win with a kill from Madison Coker. In the second set, Covenant rallied from a 20-17 deficit to knot the score at 23 after a Ginny Moore kill. But Maryville had the answer as the host Scots received back-to-back kills from Nia Haller and Rachel Kozemko to take a 2-0 match lead.

Midway through the third set, Covenant again found itself trailing. Down 15-10, the Lady Scots scored nine of the next 11 points that was highlighted by four Ginny Moore kills to take a 19-17 lead. Covenant stretched its lead to 22-18 on a Morgan Opgenorth kill and ended the set with a kill from VanDyk, the final of 18 kills in the set as a team.

The fourth set was dominated by Covenant. The Lady Scots never trailed and led by as many as 10 at 19-9 after a VanDyk kill. Covenant produced 13 kills in the set and took advantage of six errors and an .095 hitting percentage from Maryville to send the match into a fifth game.

Maryville raced out to a 6-3 lead in the deciding set, but Covenant answered with a 6-1 scoring run that was capped by a Ginny Moore kill to make it 9-7. Covenant had a 12-10 edge when Opgenorth connected for a kill but Maryville scored the final five points to escape with the victory.

Coker led Maryville with 14 kills and Kozemko added a dozen with 16 digs. Clara Adams had 29 assists while Kaitlyn Flickinger led all players with 25 digs.

Covenant also got nine kills from Opgenorth along with four kills and 12 digs from Jessica Seehorn and 10 digs from Jaclyn Stuart. Seeing her first action of the year, Olivia Becker accumulated four kills.

Covenant will open up its home schedule on Saturday with a USA South quad-match. The Lady Scots will face Huntingdon at 10 a.m. and LaGrange at 4 p.m. at Barnes Physical Education Center.
