The weather has begun to cool down as fall continues to arrive on Lookout Mountain. Covenant teams had a tough week as men's and women's soccer programs went a combined 0-3. Volleyball did record a win on Saturday, but went 1-2 for the week. The gem for Covenant over the last seven days was the performances of both cross country teams as the women captured the Maryville College Invitational crown while the men finished second in their race.
BY THE NUMBERS:
3: Number of first place finishes for the women's cross country team this season. Covenant placed five runners in the top 10 in Saturday's Maryville College Invitational, led by Beth Burgess' top finish, to earn the overall title. Covenant finished first last week in its division at the Greensboro XC Invitational and also took home the top spot in the Scots Opener back in August.
5: The number of top 10 finishes for Burgess this season after winning the Maryville College Invitational. The junior from Nicholasville, Ky., is putting together an outstanding year as she has had just one finish outside the top 10 in six events on the season.
8: The finish for men's cross country junior Stephen Dillon to pace the Scots to a second place finish overall at the Maryville College Invitational. Dillon was the second Division III runner behind Sean Hagstrom of Maryville.
2: The finish for the men's cross country team as they bested all other NCAA Division III and II schools at the event. Covenant placed better than three USA South members and Division II member Carson Newman.
.190: The hitting percentage threshold for the volleyball team. Covenant is 7-2 when they hit .190 or better as a team this season and 3-6 when they hit below that number. In Saturday's quad-match, Covenant hit .278 in a 3-0 win over Ferrum. The Lady Scots lost twice this week for the first time all year with percentages above .190 (.229 at Reinhardt and .248 vs. Averett).
4: Number of goals in the last two matches for men's soccer junior Hudson Brock. After netting a hat trick on Sept. 28 at LaGrange, Brock added another score in Covenant's 2-1 loss against Maryville on Tuesday. Brock had five scores on the year.
Men's soccer suffered its first home loss of the season in Tuesday's 2-1 defeat to Maryville... Lucy Johnson allowed one goal in 110 minutes at the net for the women's soccer team this week... Homecoming is this weekend at Covenant. Both men's and women's soccer teams play on Friday and Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. Fireworks will take place Saturday night after the men's game (approx. 9 p.m.)
