LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- This week, we will be revealing the top five moments in Covenant athletics from the 2012-13 season. 11 nominees were selected and then voted upon through an online voting contest (counting as one whole vote) and two members of the Covenant athletics department (Associate Director of Athletics Tim Sceggel, and Sports Information Director Andrew Mindeman).
Today is Moment No. 3.
October, 2012 - Volleyball claims GSAC title, multiple postseason awards
It was a memorable year for the Covenant volleyball team. Coming off a 22-win season a year before, the Lady Scots managed to improve upon that mark as they went 25-8, just one win shy of tying a school record. Covenant was even more dominant within the conference as they boasted a perfect 10-0 record, while dropping just one set in GSAC matches, en route to its first NCAA Division III conference title.
Because of the outstanding success, several Lady Scots were honored with postseason awards from the conference and NCCAA. Freshman Chelsea Van Dyk claimed both the Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in the GSAC as she led the conference in kills and kills per set by a wide margin. Van Dyk was later selected to the NCCAA Mid-East Region team.
Head coach Heather Taylor captured Coach of the Year honors in the GSAC and the NCCAA Mid-East Region.
Sophomore Stephanie Kirkpatrick was selected to the All-GSAC, GSAC All-Academic, NCCAA Mid-East Region and CoSIDA Academic All-District teams. Covenant also had junior Estes Carlson on the All-GSAC team along with senior Jessica Chittenden.
To top off the season, the volleyball team earned an NCCAA Scholar Team award. Together, the nine members of the varsity team produced a team GPA of 3.42 proving that the Lady Scots were a tough team to beat both on and off the court in one of the best volleyball seasons in school history.
