LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Fresh off being named GSAC Player and Freshman of the Year, freshman Chelsea Van Dyk had 11 kills to lead Covenant to a 3-0 win (25-13, 25-13, 25-12) over Rust on Saturday morning.
Covenant improves to 23-6 overall with the win, topping last season's win total by one. The Lady Scots will wrap-up the regular season with a home match on Thursday, November 8 when they host Tennessee Temple at 7 p.m.
Van Dyk added a pair of block assists and four digs on the day, just two days after earning the GSAC top honors. Stephanie Kirkpatrick, who earned all-conference accolades, recorded 26 assists and five digs.
Covenant managed to pull away from the visiting Bearcats midway through the first set. After being tied 5-5, the Lady Scots went on a 15-5 scoring run to cruise to the game win. Jessica Chittenden, another one of the four Lady Scots that earned all-conference honors, had a pair of kills during the scoring streak.
In the second set, Covenant jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, with kills from Van Dyk and Hannah Rogers, and never trailed. Four straight attack errors from Rust gave the Lady Scots the set win. Covenant then finished off the match in the third set as they got out to a 11-3 lead and led by as many as 14 points late in the set.
Rust (4-17) was led by Shakeitha Garnder's seven kills and Marian Lee's 15 assists.
