ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Covenant volleyball team got 10 kills and 10 digs from freshman Chelsea Van Dyk as the Lady Scots swept the host Spelman Jaguars 25-10, 25-17, 25-9 on Tuesday night to remain perfect in conference play.
Van Dyk led Covenant (19-6, 9-0 GSAC) in kills and added two solo blocks and three block assists on the night. The freshman also hit at a .400 clip to lead the Lady Scots.
Estes Carlson led the Covenant defense with 20 digs to go along with a pair of service aces. Stephanie Kirkpatrick added 26 assists and eight digs. Cora Schroeder tallied eight kills, while Pretoria den Boer had five.
Covenant took control early in the first set as they jumped out to a 13-3 lead after a Jessica Chittenden kill and a Van Dyk ace. The Lady Scots took their largest lead of the set at 24-8 after a Van Dyk kill.
In the second set, Covenant trailed 3-2 before scoring eight of the next 11 points and the Lady Scots would not relinquish the lead from there. Schroeder had two kills during the scoring spurt with Chittenden adding one. Spelman would get as close as three points at 12-9, but Covenant responded by going on an 8-1 scoring run capped by a Chittenden and Schroeder assisted block.
The Lady Scots took a 6-4 lead in the third set before rattling off 19 of the next 24 points to win the set and the match. Estes Carlson sealed the victory for Covenant with her second ace of the night.
Spelman (1-16, 1-7 GSAC) was led by Solange McKenzie's seven kills. Nija Chappel added 14 digs and Raven Booker had five assists for the Jaguars.
Covenant returns home on Saturday for another tri-match. The Lady Scots take on GSAC member Salem College at 11:00 a.m. and then Judson College at 3:00 p.m. in Barnes Physical Education Center. Salem and Judson face each other at 1:00 p.m.
