LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant Lady Scots dropped the first two sets before rallying with two set wins, but the comeback fell short in the fifth and deciding set as Maryville College came away with a 3-2 (25-18, 25-11, 21-25, 19-25, 15-9) win on Tuesday night in front of a boisterous crowd.
Maryville (3-2) took control early as they cruised to victories in both the first and second set. Covenant bounced back with a third set win and led throughout the fourth set to force a deciding fifth set.
Maryville took charge in the fifth set as they scored five straight points to break a 5-5 tie. Down 14-6, Jessica Chittenden and Pretoria den Boer had back-to-back kills to bring the Lady Scots to within 14-8. A kill by Maryville's Kara Strickland finished off the Covenant comeback, however, and gave the visitors the win.
Covenant (2-2) was led by Chelsea Van Dyk's 17 kills. Stephanie Kirkpatrick continued her outstanding play as she accumulated 34 assists, five kills, and six digs. Estes Carlson had 15 digs, while Hannah Rogers and den Boer had 11 and 10 digs each.
Strickland led Maryville with 15 kills and Kelsey Handel recorded 13 of her own. Teri Lind added 32 assists and Mallory Bonee had 14 digs.
Covenant returns to action on Thursday night when they host Sewanee at 7:00 p.m. at Barnes Physical Education Center.
