NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Jessica Chittenden and Chelsea Van Dyk each had 11 kills for Covenant as the Lady Scots took down Kentucky Christian in five sets 3-2 (9-25, 25-17, 25-18, 13-25, 15-13) in the final game of the Scott Jones Classic for Covenant.
The Lady Scots (2-1) started off slowly as Kentucky Christian cruised to the 25-9 first set win. In the second set, Covenant gained an early 11-5 advantage, thanks to a kill from Hannah Rogers, but the Lady Knights climbed back to tie the score at 13 apiece. The Lady Scots responded and scored eight of the next nine points and took the set.
Covenant led throughout the third set to win it easily, but again fell flat in the fourth set as Kentucky Christian tied the match up at 2-2. In the fifth and deciding set, the Lady Scots jumped out to a 6-2 lead only to see that margin disappear as the Lady Knights gained the advantage at 11-10. A Chittenden kill, coupled with two Kentucky Christian errors, gave Covenant a 13-11 lead. The Lady Scots finished off the set and match with a kill from Van Dyk.
Cora Schroeder tallied 19 digs and eight kills for the Lady Scots. Estes Carlson and Pretoria den Boer had 18 and 10 digs, respectively, while Stephanie Kirkpatrick recorded 34 assists.
Kentucky Christian (1-1) got 22 kills and 13 digs from Amy Hall. Lauren Dunn added a match-high 41 assists. Jessi Hatzler led the way in digs with 17.
Covenant will open its home schedule on Tuesday, September 4 at 6:00 p.m. when Maryville College visits Barnes Physical Education Center.
