BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Covenant women's tennis team opened the spring season on Saturday night with an 8-1 victory over Belhaven at the Dielen Tennis Complex at Birmingham Southern.
The match was moved to later in the day on Saturday after a snowstorm hit Lookout Mountain stranding the Scots on the mountain.
The win marked the fifth time in the last six years that Covenant has won its season-opening dual match.
Covenant (1-0) took a 2-1 match lead after winning matches at the top two doubles flights. Esther Eddy and Madelyn Savage defended the No. 1 spot with an 8-1 win over Belhaven's (0-2) Macey Lea and Courtney Buffintong, while Mariah Westra and Nicole Restrepo were 8-3 winners over Cassidy Ainsworth and Emilie Ferguson at the No. 2 position.
The Scots then cruised through singles play to complete the season-opening win.
Gillian Bosko took a straight-set win over Chantel Quarles at the No. 4 flight and Savage gave the Scots a 4-1 lead with her 6-0, 6-1 win over Lea at No. 2. Justine Blick clinched the match for the Scots with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Buffintong at No. 5.
At No. 1 singles, Eddy took down Julia Keffer by 6-1, 6-3 scores. Restrepo won 6-2, 6-2 over Ainsworth at No. 3 before Laney Beckwith capped the match with her 6-1, 6-2 win over Ferguson at No. 6.
Covenant will be back in action on Saturday with a pair of matches on the road. The Scots will face Centre at 9:30 a.m. before taking on Thomas More at 4:30 p.m.
