FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Covenant women's tennis team, under seventh-year head coach John Hirte, was selected third in the West Division of the USA South, as the league released its annual preseason coaches' poll on Wednesday.

Each divisional preseason poll only includes votes from coaches within that particular division-only. Head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.

Covenant received one first place vote and totaled 50 points to place third in the division. The Scots are coming off a 9-9 season last year and a 4-2 finish in the USA South.

Piedmont collected seven of the nine first place votes, and 61 overall points, to be selected as the preseason favorite. Huntingdon tallied 56 points and one first place vote for second, while LaGrange (43 points) and Brevard (36 points) completed the top five.

In the East Division, defending conference tournament champion N.C. Wesleyan was tabbed as the favorite as the Battling Bishops picked up seven first place votes and 63 points. Methodist, Averett, Meredith, and Pfeiffer rounded out the top five.

Covenant opens up the spring portion of its schedule on Feb. 9 at region foe Birmingham Southern. The home opener for the Scots is set for Feb. 22 against Centre.
