LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Backed by solid efforts up and down the lineup, the Covenant women's tennis team blanked visiting LaGrange, 9-0, on Saturday at the Covenant Tennis Complex.
The win improves Covenant to 8-7 overall and 3-2 in the USA South. LaGrange drops to 9-8 on the year and 3-3 in league play.
Despite some close matches, Covenant seized a 3-0 match lead with a sweep in doubles play. Annie DeLuca and Esther Eddy took down Jenna Eppes and Liz Minick 8-5 at the top spot, while Aly Hall and Jennie Spielman were also 8-5 winners over Nicole Phillips and Kaitlin Smith at No. 2. Masha Lanska and Morgan McCain rounded out the sweep with their 8-4 win over Alexandria Chenowith and Mikayla Drake at the third spot.
Hall gave Covenant a 4-0 lead with her 6-0, 6-2 win over Eppes at the top singles spot. Eddy then clinched the match for the Scots with her 6-4, 6-2 win over Smith at No. 3.
DeLuca was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Minick at the second slight and Spielman was victorious 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4. Mackenzie Jones notched a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6, while McCain was a part of the only three-set match of the day as she outlasted Chenowith 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 5.
Covenant will travel to face region foe Berry on Wednesday in Mount Berry, Ga. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
