ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Covenant women's tennis team dropped two close decisions in doubles play and would not be able to recover in singles as the Lady Scots fell 9-0 at Oglethorpe on Tuesday evening.
The match was the first in a week for Covenant (4-5) after the Lady Scots played three matches in Florida over spring break. The contest was a rescheduled one from the March 1 rain out.
Oglethorpe (3-4) took a pair of close matches in doubles play to build a 3-0 lead. The host Stormy Petrels used a 9-7 victory at No. 2 doubles as Shannon Cruz and Halley Sickling defeated Covenant's Aly Hall and Jennie Spielman. At No. 3 doubles, Morgan McCain and Mariah Westra fell to Taylor Cranford and Charlotte Disley 8-6.
In singles play, the tight matches continued to go Oglethorpe's way. McCain took Sickling to three sets at the No. 5 spot, but fell 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3) in the only three-set match of the day. Hall was defeated at the top singles spot 6-3, 7-5 by Caroline Johnson.
Masha Lanska took Oglethorpe's Delaney Abood down to the wire in each of the first two sets, but fell 7-5, 7-5 at the sixth position. Spielman also took a 7-5 set one loss to Cranford before falling 6-0 in the second set at the No. 4 spot.
Covenant begins USA South play on Friday against Maryville on the road. Matches begin at 2:30 p.m.
