FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Covenant women's tennis team was picked as the favorite in the USA South West Division as the conference unveiled its 2018 preseason coaches' poll on Thursday morning.
Covenant picked up four of the eight first-place votes in the division and had 43 total points to edge out Piedmont for the top spot. Piedmont had three first place votes to place second, while LaGrange collected the other vote. Huntingdon, LaGrange, and Agnes Scott rounded out the top five in the poll.
It is the second consecutive year that Covenant has been selected as the preseason favorite. Last year, the coaches' prediction came to fruition as the Lady Scots went undefeated in league play and claimed the program's first conference regular season championship.
The Lady Scots will enter the spring with a 17-match win streak against USA South foes in regular season play. Covenant claimed its first conference regular season title last season after going 7-0 in league play. Since joining the conference in 2014, Covenant is 37-6 in regular season league matches.
The USA South Tournament will start on April 13 in LaGrange, Ga., as a part of the USA South Spring Sports Festival, hosted by the City of LaGrange and Troup County. The tournament will take place both at the McCluskey Tennis Center and the LaGrange College Varsity Courts. The top four teams from each division will advance to the tournament.
