CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Covenant women's tennis senior Gracie Smith collected her 50th career singles victory and the Lady Scots cruised past Maryville, 9-0, in USA South action on Wednesday night at Baylor School.
The match was moved to the indoor courts at Baylor due to inclement weather.
Smith, a senior from Chattanooga, Tenn., finished off Katie Stephens 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to record her 50th career victory. The senior has compiled a record of 50-19 in singles play during her career and continues to add to her program record in the category.
Covenant eased past the northern Scots in doubles play to grab a 3-0 lead. Aly Hall and Esther Eddy won 8-1 at the No. 1 spot, while Smith and Claire Luger were 8-3 winners at No. 2. Annie DeLuca and Jennie Spielman took an 8-0 win at the third position to complete the sweep.
In singles, Hall picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Savannah Bain at the top spot and DeLuca produced a 6-0, 6-1 win over McKennah Francis at No. 2.
The rest of the singles matches were played to an 8-game pro set since the match had reached a decision. Luger won 8-1 over Carter Dickinson at the third flight, while Eddy took an 8-2 victory over Tessa Wilcox at No. 4. Spielman capped the night with her 8-1 win at No. 6.
The shutout was the fourth in five USA South matches on the year for Covenant.
Covenant travels to Montgomery, Ala., on Friday for a key USA South matchup with Huntingdon. Match time is set for 2 p.m. CDT (3 p.m. EDT).
