Women's Tennis Defeats LaGrange, Emory & Henry

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Covenant women's tennis team defeated LaGrange 9-0 before collecting a 7-2 win over Emory & Henry on Saturday afternoon at The McCallie School in Chattanooga.

The home matches were moved away from Lookout Mountain after heavy rains overnight.

Covenant improves to 5-5 on the year. The LaGrange match did not count towards league standings as the two teams will play their conference match later in the year.

Against LaGrange, the Lady Scots had little trouble as all three doubles teams picked up wins to set up singles play. Aly Hall and Esther Eddy were 8-2 winners at No. 1, while Claire Luger and Gracie Smith also won 8-2 at the No. 2 spot. Jennie Spielman and Annie DeLuca made it 3-0 with their 8-5 win at No. 3.

In singles action, Hall was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at the top spot, while DeLuca picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2. Luger won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 and Eddy had a hard-fought three-set win over Jia Lee 6-3, 2-6, 11-9 at the fourth position. Smith and Spielman rounded out the bottom two spots in the order with victories to complete the sweep of LaGrange.

Later in the day, Covenant would defeat non-conference foe Emory & Henry by a 7-2 score. Once again, Covenant got off to a good start in doubles play as Hall and Eddy along with Luger and Smith were victorious at the top two spots. Sarah Ragsdale and Morgan McCain collected an 8-4 win at the third flight.

The top four spots in singles play also won for Covenant. Hall won in straight sets at the No. 1 position, while DeLuca was a 7-5, 6-0 winner at No. 2. Eddy took another close win as she bested Savanna Summers 6-4, 7-6 (5) at No. 3. Spielman was victorious at No. 4 by scores of 6-2, 6-3.


Covenant will host Agnes Scott for a USA South matchup on Friday, March 24 on Lookout Mountain. Match time is 4 p.m.
