LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's tennis team took all three doubles matches and would go on to defeat visiting Milligan 7-2 in the 2016-17 season opener on Saturday at the Covenant Tennis Complex.
Covenant starts the year 1-0. Milligan, an NAIA and Appalachian Athletic Conference member, drops to 0-2 on the year.
Covenant was challenged in the doubles portion, but came away with all three wins. Aly Hall and Esther Eddy combined for an 8-4 win at the No. 1 spot over Abby Allen and Lexie Hill. Claire Luger and Gracie Smith netted an 8-6 win over Minda Martin and Brenna Ketron at No. 2, while Annie DeLuca and Jennie Spielman were 8-4 winners at the No. 3 flight.
In singles play, Hall was victorious 6-4, 6-2 over Allen at No. 1. Covenant then took all three flights in the second half of the order with Eddy taking a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Ketron at No. 4, followed by a match-clinching win by Smith at No. 5 7-6, (5), 6-0 over Rachel Blankenship. Morgan McCain capped the win with a 7-6 (4), 2-6, 10-6 win over Rebecca Guthrie.
In a late addition to the schedule, the Lady Scots will host Snead State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Covenant will then send players to compete in the ITA Regional tournament in Atlanta, Ga., Friday, Sept. 23-Saturday, Sept. 24.
