ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The No. 2 seeded Covenant women's tennis team took two of three doubles and then four singles matches to defeat No. 3 seed North Carolina Wesleyan 6-3 in a USA South Tournament semifinal on Saturday at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center.
Covenant, ranked No. 16 in this week's ITA region poll, moves to 15-5 overall on the year. It was the second time this year the Lady Scots defeated N.C. Wesleyan.
Claire Luger and Gracie Smith teamed up for an 8-3 victory at the No. 2 doubles spot giving the Lady Scots their first point of the match. Lindsay Geving and Jennie Spielman picked up a crucial victory at No. 3 doubles with their 8-6 win.
In singles play, it was Smith that produced the match-clincher at No. 4 singles with a 6-4, 7-6 (2) victory over Ana Diaz. Aly Hall bested Valeria Berber 6-4, 6-3 at the top flight, while Luger and Geving also took wins. Luger won 6-4, 6-1 over Florencia Sorrentino at the No. 3 spot and Geving took a 6-4, 6-4 win against Katie Beeman.
The tournament ends because the championship match was scheduled for Sunday. (click for more info). Covenant's Aly Hall earned tournament MVP honors with her singles victory, while Claire Luger also picked up All-Tournament honors.
