STAUNTON, Va. -- The Covenant women's tennis team split its two matches on Saturday. The Lady Scots defeated Mary Baldwin 8-1 in the morning before falling 5-4 to Meredith in the afternoon.
Both matches took place at Mary Baldwin. The Meredith match was a rescheduled contest from back on Feb. 27.
Covenant finishes the regular season with a 12-6 overall record and 9-3 in the USA South. The Lady Scots will now await their seeding and opponent for the USA South tournament that begins next weekend in Rocky Mount, N.C.
In the day's first match, Covenant had little trouble with Mary Baldwin. The Lady Scots took all three doubles as No. 1 duo of Gretchen Rowe and Claire Luger produced a shutout, while Gracie Smith and Jennie Spielman scored an 8-2 win at No. 2 and Catherine Landers and Jessica Rowe took an 8-3 win at the No. 3 spot.
In singles, Gretchen Rowe won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 and Annie DeLuca continued her strong play with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot. Smith took a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 and at No. 4 Lindsay Geving secured a 6-1, 6-2 win. Jessica Rowe went three sets at No. 5 but pulled out a 7-6 (6), 2-6, 10-7 victory.
Stiffer competition awaited in the day's second match. In a rematch of last year's USA South tournament semifinal, the Lady Scots once again came up just short.
Meredith took two of the three doubles as Smith and Spielman were the only Covenant duo to get a doubles victory. The Avenging Angels then took the top three spots in singles play before Covenant grabbed the final three.
Smith defeated Cailin Goff in three sets 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-7 at the No. 4 position giving her 10 singles wins on the year. Geving took a 6-0, 6-4 decision at the No. 5 position and Spielman was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at No. 6.
