LAGRANGE, Ga. -- The Covenant women's tennis team received more solid play from up and down the lineup as the Lady Scots eased past LaGrange 8-1 in USA South action on Saturday afternoon.
The victory is the sixth straight for Covenant, tying a program record set twice last season, and moves the Lady Scots to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in league play. The 7-1 start is also the best start to a season in program history.
LaGrange drops to 5-2 on the year and 3-2 in the USA South.
Covenant's No. 1 doubles team of Gretchen Rowe and Claire Luger won 8-4, while Lindsay Geving and Annie DeLuca took a 9-7 victory at No. 2. Gracie Smith and Jennie Spielman finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, the Lady Scots would win five of the six matches. Luger was a 6-4, 6-0 winner at No. 2 and DeLuca won 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot. Smith won a battle of Smiths at No. 4 over Kaitlin Smith of LaGrange 6-0, 6-2. Geving had to go an extra point in the first set but ended up with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5 while Spielman went three sets before winning 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 at the No. 6 position.
Covenant will look to keep the win streak alive on Tuesday with a trip to Oglethorpe. Match time in Atlanta is set for 4 p.m.
