LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Members of the Covenant women's tennis team competed at the ITA South Regionals last month in Atlanta, Ga., on the campus of Emory University.
Lady Scots won a total of nine matches over that weekend. Junior Lindsay Geving led the way with three singles victories against Shelby Dryden of Averett (6-0, 6-0), Katie Beeman of N.C. Wesleyan (4-6, 6-4, 6-3), and Nicole Langford of Agnes Scott 5-2 (def: injury). Geving also teamed up with freshman Sara Kathryn Searle to defeat a duo from Agnes Scott 8-1.
Sophomore co-captain Claire Luger also won multiple singles matches. She defeated Jessie Gomes from Averett 8-1, and teammate Annie Deluca in a thrilling match that went 9-8(7). DeLuca also captured her 1st collegiate singles victory by defeating Stephanie Hunter of Methodist.
Sophomore Gracie Smith was the lone Lady Scot to advance in the Main Draw -- defeating Shanna Mattson of Averett 6-1, 6-1 before losing to Kathryn Ford of Millsaps in the next round.
"I was very pleased with our performance that weekend," said head coach John Hirte. "Everybody won a match and competed well against some very tough competition. Looking ahead to the spring, it definitely gives us a good idea of where we are as a team, and what we need to do to improve for the spring."
Covenant will open its spring schedule on Feb. 7 against Snead State at home.
