LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's tennis team said farewell to two seniors and a departing junior on Saturday afternoon as part of Senior Day. On the court, the Lady Scots took care of business as they wrapped up the third seed in the upcoming USA South tournament with a 9-0 win over Mary Baldwin.
Covenant improves to 15-6 overall and 10-2 inside the USA South. The Lady Scots clinched the third seed in next week's USA South tournament in the process. Covenant's only two losses in league play have come against the top two teams in the conference, Methodist and Meredith.
Once the match got underway, Covenant made quick work of the visiting Fighting Squirrels in the two-hour and 45 minute match.
All three departing players earned wins in both singles and doubles play. Hyatt teamed with Sarah Carter for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles before notching a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 1 singles spot. Rowe and Claire Luger coasted to an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles followed by Rowe's 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. Peele remained perfect in singles play on the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6 position after taking an 8-1 win in doubles with Ellen Kirkpatrick.
Gracie Smith earned her 15th singles win of the season, as she continues to extend her program-record season, with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 4 spot. Luger and Kirkpatrick each claimed 6-1, 6-0 victories at singles positions Nos. 3 and 5, respectively.
Covenant will play its final home match of the season on Tuesday against regional power Sewanee. That match is set for 3 p.m.
