Women's Tennis Sets Program Record with 8-1 Win

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The spring 2014 season just keeps getting better for the Covenant women's tennis team. The Lady Scots set a program record for wins on Thursday afternoon by defeating Maryville 8-1.

Covenant improves to 13-6 overall and an impressive 8-2 in the USA South. The 13 wins eclipses the previous program record for victories in a season of 12 set in 2009. Maryville drops to 5-7 overall and 5-5 in the conference.

Freshman Gracie Smith continued her phenomenal rookie season with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles. Smith has already set the program mark for singles wins in a season with 13 and is 9-0 on the year at the No. 5 position.

Gretchen Rowe, Claire Luger and Madeline Hyatt notched two wins each, one in singles and one in doubles. Rowe teamed up with Claire Luger for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles and then took a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. Luger was victorious at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-1. At No. 1 doubles, Hyatt and Sarah Carter captured an 8-6 win and Hyatt won 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles spot.

Ellen Kirkpatrick and Molly Peele paired up for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles, while Lindsay Geving claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.

Covenant will host USA South foe Averett on Friday starting at 4 p.m. The women will host Senior Day for Rowe, Hyatt and Peele on Saturday against Mary Baldwin beginning at 1 p.m.
