Scots Weekly: Stats & Notes (March 10-15)

What a week it was in Covenant athletics! The new on-campus tennis courts opened for play, the softball team broke single-game records en route to three victories, the baseball team swept Piedmont, women's tennis has won six straight matches and the men's team snapped a losing streak almost two years long. OK, let's break it all down for you.

Records Fall, Streaks Broken:

This past week saw incredible individual and team performances.

7: Number of RBIs in a single game recorded in separate games by softball's Lauren Johns and Morgan Lane. Johns set a new program record with seven RBIs in a 14-5 victory at Maryville, but her record was short-lived as Lane joined the seven-RBI club two days later in a 12-11 extra-inning loss at Sewanee. Before this past week, no Covenant player had ever recorded more than five RBIs in a game.

5: Staying with softball, this number reflects the number of hits recorded by Lane in a 23-6 win at Sewanee. Lane set a new program mark in hits by going 5-for-6 in the rout of the Tigers.

3: Number of triples by baseball's Will Cleland that broke a school-record in Saturday's 11-8 win over Piedmont in game one of a doubleheader. Cleland finished the first game by going 4-for-5 with those three triples.

April 17, 2012: This was the last time the men's tennis team won a match before Saturday's 9-0 win over Johnson. The program, which had to undergo major rebuilding under new head coach John Hirte, has been close to breaking into the win column several times this season and finally got that win on Saturday.

Other Notes:

The women's tennis team's current six-match win streak is the longest since winning nine straight during the 2009 season... The baseball team has now swept two USA South series this season... The six wins for the softball team already matches last year's win total.

New Courts:

A major addition to the Covenant athletic department was completed late last week. Six new on-campus tennis courts opened for play on Saturday. Click here and here for photo galleries from the first matches.

If you missed it, check out Scott Gillespie's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth on Friday to defeat Piedmont 4-3.
