LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The wait is finally over. Six brand new tennis courts on the campus of Covenant College were opened for play on Saturday. The Covenant women's tennis team made sure the grand opening was a successful one.
The Lady Scots knocked off USA South foe LaGrange 7-2 and then dispatched non-conference opponent Johnson 8-1 during Saturday's play.
Covenant has won six straight matches, including four in a row in conference action, and move to 8-3 on the season and 4-0 in the USA South.
No. 1 doubles tandem Madeline Hyatt and Sarah Carter took down Caroline Brashier and Morgan McDonald 9-7. Nos. 2 and 3 doubles teams had a little easier time as Gracie Smith and Lindsay Geving won 8-3 at No. 2, while Ellen Kirkpatrick and Molly Peele took an 8-1 win at No. 3.
In singles play, Carter took a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot over LaGrange's Blake Alford. Covenant won all three singles at Nos. 4-6 to seal the victory. At No. 4, Geving bested Denney Meigs 6-4, 6-2, Kirkpatrick took a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 and Peele won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot.
Against Johnson, the Lady Scots dropped only five points in the nine matches combined. Hyatt, Smith, Kirkpatrick and Peele all earned 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles play. Geving took a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3, while Carter won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 position. Covenant's lone defeat was in doubles play and came by way of a default.
Covenant will host regional power Berry on Tuesday beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Lookout Mountain.
