LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's tennis team begins the spring portion of its schedule on the road at Berry on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
The Lady Scots have a lot to look forward to this spring season. Covenant finished the spring of 2012 with a 6-7 record (5-3 in GSAC competition) and they return several key members from that team.
Returning this season is the sister combination of Anne Marie Rowe and Gretchen Rowe. Anne Marie, a senior, finished last season with a 7-5 singles record, while Gretchen was also 7-5 overall, including a 6-5 mark as a freshman and Covenant's No. 2 player. Together, the Rowe sisters were 7-4 in doubles play.
Entering his first season as head coach of both the men's and women's tennis programs, John Hirte expects his women's team to compete well this year. Hirte played at Covenant for four seasons earning GSAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year and NCCAA All-American honors last season.
After the trip to Berry to start the season, Covenant will play GSAC foe Wesleyan on Saturday. The Lady Scots have 10 GSAC matches scheduled. Covenant will play perennial power Sewanee as well as Division II member Carson-Newman this season. The Lady Scots will also host a match against Spelman on Lookout Mountain in April, marking the first time a tennis match has been held on campus.
