CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Both Covenant tennis teams played their one and only match of the fall season against NCAA Division II member Young Harris on Thursday afternoon at Chattanooga Christian School. The men and women both dropped 9-0 decisions at the hands of the Mountain Lions.
Covenant will begin its spring schedule in the month of February. The men start on February 2 at Georgia Gwinnett, while the women open on February 16 by hosting Hiwassee.
John Hirte begins his first season as head coach of both programs. Hirte finished a very successful four-year collegiate career at Covenant during the spring of 2012.
Young Harris had their way in both men's and women's matches on Thursday. On the men's side, Covenant's doubles team of Jake Sikkema and Ben Swakopf fell 8-1 to Young Harris' Joan Valls and Gabriel Oliveira. In singles play, Young Harris nearly took all 6-0 decisions except for Covenant's Jeffrey Cox who lost 6-1, 6-0 to Devin Hampton.
The Lady Scots also had a rough day against a better opponent. Kimberly Rodgers was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by Young Harris' Charlotte Moreau. Madi Hyatt and Gretchen Rowe played tough with Young Harris' top doubles team of Jane Plevako and Charlotte Dawson, but ultimately fell 8-1. Plevako then defeated Hyatt 6-1, 6-0 in singles play.
