Duble and Burrell Power Lady Scots over Berea

BEREA, Ky. -- Kyra Duble and Kailey Burrell each scored two goals and the Covenant women's soccer team scored three times in a span of four minutes late in the second half to defeat Berea, 4-1, in USA South action on Thursday afternoon.

The win keeps Covenant (5-4-2, 3-0-1 USA South) unbeaten in conference play and the Lady Scots extended their unbeaten streak to five.

Tied at 1-1 entering the final 10 minutes of the second half, Covenant scored three times over a span of four minutes to pull away for the win. Burrell put the Lady Scots ahead for good in the 82nd minute as she received a short through ball and then beat the Berea defense down the field before dribbling around the keeper and putting her shot into the net for the score.

It was Burrell's third game-winning goal of the year.

Covenant added insurance goals in the following minutes. Duble collected her second goal of the match as she put away a deflected shot attempt from Addy Cronan to make it 3-1 in the 84th minute. In the 86th minute, it was Burrell beating the Berea back line again as she out-ran the host Mountaineers and found the back of the net to put Covenant ahead 4-1.

The goals for Burrell gives her six on the year, while Duble's two-goal match puts her at seven scores for the season. It was Burrell's first two-goal match of the year and Duble's second.

Duble put Covenant ahead early in the match. In the second minute, Duble took a through ball from Lizzy Hightower and beat Berea keeper Jade Fulkerson for the goal.

Berea (2-12, 1-4 USA South) tied the match in the 63rd minute on Bailee Vanover's 10th goal of the season.

Lucy Sandhoff made three saves for Covenant as she picked up her fifth win of the year. Fulkerson made eight saves as Covenant tested her throughout the match.

The Lady Scots held a 25-9 edge in total shots, with Burrell leading the way with five attempts. Covenant also had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks as the Lady Scots controlled the pace of play for much of the match.


Covenant will play its final non-conference match of the year on Saturday at Bob Jones. Kick-off in Greenville, S.C., is set for 4 p.m.
