LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Kyra Duble and Paige Simons recorded goals and the Covenant women's soccer team collected its second shutout victory of the season with a 2-0 win over Brevard on Homecoming Saturday at Scotland Yard.
It was the USA South opener for both teams. Covenant goes to 2-4-1 on the year, while Brevard drops to 1-5-2 overall.
Covenant controlled play for much of the match and scored in the 14th minute. Duble received a short cross through the box from Kailey Burrell and found the back of the net past Brevard keeper Rebeccah Rojas for the goal. The score was Duble's team-leading fourth of the year.
The Lady Scots outshot Brevard 8-3 over the first 45 minutes, and took a 1-0 lead into the break.
The turning point of the match came late in the second half. Brevard's Emma White took a free kick shot from just outside the box, but the attempt hit the crossbar and bounded away. Covenant possessed the ball and countered quickly as Addy Cronan played the ball over midfield before finding Paige Simons, who took the pass and scored in the 79th minute to make it 2-0.
The goal was Simons' first of the year, while Cronan was credited with the assist.
That was more than enough offense for the Lady Scots to hold off Brevard. Lucy Sandhoff made one save in 90 minutes at the net as the Covenant back line stood tall throughout the match.
Covenant held a 23-6 edge in total shots. Burrell had seven attempts, while Lizzy Hightower had four for Covenant. Abbie Petrosky and Brianna Link took two shots apiece for Brevard.
Rojas finished with seven saves for the visiting Tornados.
Covenant will go out of conference on Monday to host Oglethorpe. Match time at Scotland Yard is set for 7:30 p.m.
