ROME, Ga. -- The Covenant women's soccer team, under 26th-year head coach Mark Duble, was selected to finish third in the USA South West Division, as the league unveiled its preseason coaches' poll on Wednesday.
Covenant went 11-8-1 overall last season, which included a 6-2 mark in the USA South, and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament. The Lady Scots, who return 10 starters from last year's squad, received 48 total points in the poll.
Defending conference tournament champion Piedmont is the favorite in the West as the Lions got five first place votes and 61 total points. Reigning West Division champion Maryville garnered the other four first place tallies and totaled 60 points. Huntingdon (41 points) and Brevard (38 points) rounded out the top five.
Each divisional preseason poll only includes votes from coaches within that particular division-only. Head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.
In the East Division, Pfeiffer was picked as the favorite with six votes for the top spot and 62 points. Greensboro received the final three first place votes and had 54 points to come in second.
The USA South Tournament is set to begin on Oct. 30. The top six teams in each division qualify for the tournament, with seeds 3-4 hosting first round matches on Oct. 30. Divisional seeds 1-2 receive a first round bye and host quarterfinal round matches on Nov. 2. The highest remaining seed will host the semifinals and championship on Nov. 8-9.
Covenant opens the 2019 campaign on Aug. 30 at Centre.
