LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's soccer team celebrated its 25th season of varsity competition in 2018 and produced the 22nd winning season in program history. Under head coach Mark Duble, the Lady Scots finished 11-8-1 overall, 6-2 in the USA South, and advanced to the USA South Tournament semifinals.
In addition to another winning season, it was the eighth time in the last nine years that Covenant finished above .500. It was also the 19th time in program history that the Lady Scots won 10 or more matches.
Kailey Burrell and Addy Cronan both recorded a team-high 10 goals on the year with four assists. Burrell became the first Covenant player to earn USA South Rookie of the Year honors, while Cronan was an All-USA South West Division first team honoree.
Covenant found its groove in early October. The Lady Scots won four straight matches from Oct. 6-13 and outscored opponents 18-1 during the stretch with four shutouts. For a second year in a row, Covenant advanced to the USA South Tournament semifinals after knocking off Agnes Scott and Salem in the first two rounds.
Senior goalkeeper Rachel Lemay capped her illustrious career in a big way in 2018. Lemay was named the USA South Goalkeeper of the Year after playing every minute at the net and accumulating 127 saves, eight shutouts, and a save percentage of .847. She was second in the USA South in save percentage and third in both saves and shutouts.
Since 2004, no Covenant keeper has put together the numbers that Lemay did during this season and her career. Lemay's saves this year were the most over the last 15 years and her 303 career saves are also the most during that span. Lemay ended her career with 26 shutouts, 10 more than the next closest keeper in program history since 2004. Lemay recorded 20 saves at No. 5 Messiah to open the season, the most of any keeper on record in program history.
Lemay earned first team All-USA South and All-West Division honors for a third straight year. She was also recognized for her efforts in the classroom as she earned a spot on the United Soccer Coaches first team Scholar All-South Region.
MATCH OF THE YEAR:
Needing a crucial win to stay near the top of the USA South West Division standings, Covenant got just that in dramatic fashion in a 2-1, overtime, victory over Huntingdon on Oct. 12.
Down 1-0 since the sixth minute of play, the Lady Scots drew even in the 78th minute when Lizzy Hightower curled into the net a free kick from just beyond the box. Covenant would have opportunities in the attacking third over the final few minutes, but the Huntingdon defense stood tall and preserved the tie into the overtime session.
In overtime, Addy Cronan took over. In the 95th minute, Cronan took possession of the ball inside midfield then beat one defender and the keeper before putting her shot in from 12 yards out to give Covenant the 2-1 victory.
It was one of three game-winning goals for Cronan during the year.
The win vaulted Covenant into third in the USA South West Division and all but assured the Lady Scots of a home match in the conference tournament later in the season.
