LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's soccer team recorded its seventh shutout of the year and used a goal and an assist from Addy Cronan to defeat Agnes Scott, 3-0, in a USA South Tournament first round match on Wednesday afternoon at Scotland Yard.
Covenant (10-7-1) advances to the quarterfinals of the tournament and will travel to face No. 2 East seed Salem on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Lady Scots held a 32-2 advantage in shots on the afternoon and capitalized on those chances. Grace Herring scored the eventual game-winner in the 18th minute as she received a short pass from Cronan and knocked in a shot from the far right side of the box to give Covenant a 1-0 lead.
The goal was Herring's first collegiate score.
In the second half, Covenant extended the margin. Cronan dribbled into the box and found some space before getting off a shot that bounced off Agnes Scott keeper Abby Ackerson's hands and took a bounce over the goal line for the goal in the 57th minute. The score was Cronan's team-leading 10th of the season.
The Lady Scots capped the scoring in the 70th minute when Paige Simons played a quick pass to Kyra Duble in the box and Duble was get her shot around a defender and Ackerson for the goal. It was Duble's sixth of the year.
Covenant keeper Rachel Lemay and the rest of the Lady Scots defense took care of the rest. Agnes Scott had one shot on goal in the first half, as Lemay saved Zoey Perchaluk's chance in the 40th minute, and the Lady Scots kept possession of the ball for the majority of the contest.
The shutout for Lemay was her seventh of the year and the 25th in her four-year career. Ackerson was active all day at the net for Agnes Scott (4-11-2) and made 19 saves in the defeat.
Covenant will travel to face No. 2 East seed Salem on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Lady Scots defeated Salem, 3-1, on Sept. 29.
