BREVARD, N.C. -- Kailey Burrell scored the lone goal of the match early in the second half to propel the Covenant women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Brevard on Saturday afternoon in USA South action.
Covenant goes to 5-6-1 overall and 2-2 in USA South play. Brevard drops to 7-4 on the year and 3-2 in conference play.
Burrell notched her fourth goal of the season, and her second eventual game-winner, in the 49th minute. It was a freshman combination on the play as Hannah Rodehaver slotted a short cross into the box where Burrell collected and scored past Brevard keeper Rebeccah Rojas to put the Lady Scots ahead 1-0.
From there, it was a strong defensive effort to preserve the one-goal advantage and the shutout. Rachel Lemay made 10 saves on the afternoon, with four of those coming in the second half. Brevard had a number of chances over a few minute stretch in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but Lemay made three saves to keep the lead.
The shutout was Lemay's, and the team's, third of the season and the second to come against a conference opponent.
Brevard held a 16-14 edge in total shots, with each team taking 10 shots on target. Lemay was kept busy in the first half as she recorded six saves. Burrell, Lizzy Hightower, and Megan Rasku all had three shots each for Covenant.
Rojas finished with nine saves for Brevard. Ashley Hughes and Megan Shina had four attempts apiece for the host Tornados.
Covenant returns to Scotland Yard on Tuesday for a USA South contest against Berea. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
