WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Addy Cronan scored a pair of first half goals and the Covenant women's soccer took a 3-1 victory at Salem in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Even though the two teams are members of the USA South, the match does not count towards league standings. Covenant moves to 4-5-1 overall, while Salem drops to 3-6.
Cronan scored both of her goals in the first half as Covenant held a 2-1 lead. It was the second two-goal match for Cronan this week after she scored twice in a double-overtime victory at Oglethorpe on Monday. The junior leads Covenant with seven goals on the year.
Covenant took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when Cronan scored an unassisted goal. Salem bounced back to tie the match at 1-1 in the 19th minute on a score from Maddie Crumpton, but Covenant responded quickly. In the 22nd minute it was Cronan again as she took a pass from Lizzy Hightower and found the back of the net for the second time in the half.
In the second half, the Lady Scots extended their lead to 3-1 when Kailey Burrell scored an unassisted goal in the 56th minute, her third of the year.
Covenant was able to hold the two-goal margin the rest of the way. Lady Scots keeper Rachel Lemay made 13 saves on the afternoon as Salem was credited with 30 shots in the contest. Hannah Wagner made five saves at the net for Salem.
The Lady Scots took 20 shots in the match as Cronan, Hightower, and Burrell had three apiece.
Covenant returns to action on Wednesday at USA South rival Maryville. Kickoff in Maryville, Tenn., is set for 7 p.m.
