CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Piedmont's Sarah Weber scored in the 87th minute to lift the visiting Lions over the Covenant women's soccer team, 1-0, on Wednesday night at Chattanooga Christian School.
The match was moved off Lookout Mountain due to heavy rains that have fallen over the last three days.
Covenant drops to 3-5-1 overall and 1-1 in USA South play, while Piedmont remains unbeaten in conference at 2-0 and 6-3-1 on the year.
It was a defensive battle throughout until Piedmont broke the seal in the final minutes. The Lions' Cassie Kirk crossed the ball into the box where Weber one-touched the ball past Covenant keeper Rachel Lemay for the goal. The score was Weber's first of the year.
The Lady Scots would have one more look at the net, but Lizzy Hightower's attempt in the 88th minute went high of the target. Hightower led Covenant with five shots on the night.
Piedmont held an 18-9 shot advantage, including 6-2 on goal. Lemay made five saves for the Lady Scots, while Piedmont keeper Miranda McNalley made two on the night.
In the first half, Covenant had two shots on target. Hightower had a look off a free kick in the eighth minute that was hauled in by McNalley and Sarah Agee had her header off a corner kick from Abby Gienapp also find the hands of the Piedmont keeper. Agee also had a chance in the 82nd minute for Covenant, but her attempt went just wide of the net.
It was the sixth 1-0 margin in the all-time series between Covenant and Piedmont.
Covenant will travel to face Salem in a non-conference match on Saturday. Kickoff in Winston-Salem, N.C., is set for 2 p.m.
