MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- A late first half goal would be enough for host Berry to defeat the Covenant women's soccer team, 1-0, in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Mount Berry.
Covenant falls to 1-4-1 on the year, while Berry has won two straight and moves to 3-2-1 overall.
The host Vikings notched the match's only goal in the 39th minute. After a corner kick, Berry's Olivia Nye played the ball over to Lauren Caylor who headed the ball into the net from short distance. Berry would then make that goal stand the rest of the way.
Covenant had five shots in the first half, with two of those on target, but were not able to sneak one by Berry keeper Alyssa Stevens. Both of those shots-on-goal in the first half came late in the period as Covenant tried to find the equalizer. Molly Kate McClearn had a pair of attempts in the final minute of the half, however Stevens was able to keep Covenant off the board both times.
In the second half, the Berry defense continued to thwart any Covenant attack. The Lady Scots would put one shot on frame over the final 45 minutes. Kyra Duble's attempt in the 86th minute was handled by Stevens and Covenant did not get another look over the final minutes.
Berry held an 18-8 advantage in total shots and 7-3 in shots on goal. Covenant keeper Rachel Lemay recorded six saves on the night, while Stevens had three.
McClearn and Duble accounted for two shots each for the Lady Scots.
Covenant will open USA South play on Saturday at Agnes Scott. Kickoff in Decatur, Ga., is set for 2 p.m.
