LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's soccer team dominated possession and used a first half goal from Kyra Duble to defeat Agnes Scott, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon in USA South action at Scotland Yard.
The win snaps a two-match losing skid for Covenant (5-3, 1-1 USA South). Agnes Scott (0-8-1, 0-1 USA South) remains winless on the year.
Covenant possessed the ball for the majority of the contest, but it was Duble's goal in the first half that would be the lone tally on the afternoon. The freshman was given a through ball into the 18-yard box from Anna Robertson and was able to get past the keeper before finishing from about 10 yards out for the score. It is the second straight match that Duble has scored, and the goal was her third of the year. Robertson was credited with her second assist of the season.
The Lady Scots had other opportunities throughout the match to increase their lead. Covenant outshot Agnes Scott 15-3, including 11-2 in the final 45 minutes, but Scotties keeper Abby Ackerson made four saves to prevent further scoring. Robertson, Molly Kate McClearn, Paige Simons and Addy Cronan all put shots on target in the second half and an attempt from Grace Herring hit the crossbar in the 82nd minute.
The one goal was all the Covenant defense needed to hold on for the win. Rachel Lemay picked up her third complete shutout at the net for Covenant and made one save. The shutout is the fifth of the year for the Lady Scots.
Robertson led all players with three shots taken, while Duble and Simons had two apiece.
Covenant will host Brevard on Saturday at 2 p.m. Brevard is a reclassifying member of NCAA Division III and the USA South, so the match will not count towards league standings.
