LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- For a second straight day, the Covenant women's soccer team used a timely goal and tight defense to knock off a tough USA South foe. Summer Bader scored in the fourth minute and the Lady Scots held off Salem for a 1-0 victory on Saturday at Scotland Yard.
Covenant has won four straight matches and stands at 4-1 overall and sits atop the USA South West division standings with a 2-0 record in league play. The loss is Salem's first of the year as the Spririts drop to 5-1 on the year and 1-1 in the USA South.
Bader got things started for Covenant early on as she she received a pass from Anna Porch into the middle of the box and took advantage of the space to knock home the eventual game-winner. The goal is Bader's first of the year, while Porch was credited with her third assist of the season.
Covenant controlled part of the first half before Salem created some opportunities. Despite being outshot 7-4 in the opening period, the Lady Scots defense withstood the attack and took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Covenant's defense was again up to the task as it limited Salem to just four shot attempts in the period.
Rachel Lemay made six saves on the day and recorded her second shutout of the year. Salem keeper Hannah Wagner made one save on two attempts. Overall, Salem outshot Covenant 11-8. Bader, Ashlyn Franks and Savanna Cingilli each took two shots for Covenant.
Covenant will travel to Montgomery, Ala., on Friday, Sept. 23 to take on Huntingdon. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. EDT.
