MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Allie Vannoy's goal in the 59th minute was enough to give the Covenant women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Ferrum in USA South action on a soggy Saturday night at the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville.
Covenant moves to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in league play and the Lady Scots have won all three meetings with Ferrum since joining the USA South in 2013. Ferrum drops to 6-3 on the year and 1-3 in the conference.
Vannoy's goal, her second of the year, came off her own rebound. The sophomore's initial shot was saved by Ferrum keeper Hannah Stacy, but Vannoy stayed with it and was able to put home the eventual game-winner.
The Covenant defense made that goal stand the rest of the way. Ferrum managed just one more shot on goal the rest of the way and it came in the 90th minute off the foot of Ae'Niesha Mar but was saved by Rachel Lemay.
Covenant held a 10-8 advantage in shots, but Ferrum took six shots on goal to the Lady Scots' five. Lemay made saves on all six shots on target from the host Panthers, while Stacy made three in 45 minutes at the net. The shutout for Lemay is her second complete clean sheet of the year.
Vannoy and Anna Porch each took two shots to lead Covenant.
Covenant will be back at Scotland Yard on Wednesday against Piedmont at 4 p.m.
