Scots Weekly: Stats & Notes (Oct. 14-19)

Covenant teams are heading into the final weeks of regular season play. Men's and women's soccer had just one match last week as the women took another 1-0 victory while the men fell by the same score. Volleyball hosted three USA South matches and won two of them, cross country had good outings at the competitive Berry College Viking Open and men's golf finished second in a warm-up before the NCCAAs.


414: The number (rounded) of consecutive minutes that the women's soccer team has not allowed a goal. Additionally, Hannah Bales has not given up a score in 333 minutes of game play. Both of these streaks date back to October 2 and span across five matches. For those wondering, the school record for consecutive scoreless minutes is 783 set in 2004.

1-0: The women's soccer team has also developed a knack for winning 1-0 matches. The Lady Scots earned their third straight victory by this margin last Wednesday at Huntingdon. Covenant has won four games this season by 1-0 and five matches by one goal.

6: The total number of points that the volleyball team lost by in a five set defeat to Maryville on Tuesday. Maryville, who is currently undefeated in USA South play, escaped Barnes PE Center with a five set victory, but won all three of its sets by the smallest of margins -- two points. Covenant outscored Maryville overall in the match 111-110.

51: Number of kills this week from volleyball's Chelsea VanDyk. VanDyk had 22 kills in the five set loss to Maryville then had 11 and 18 kills, respectively, in Covenant's two wins on Saturday. VanDyk is currently third in the USA South in kills per set at 3.75.

8: The finish for the women's cross country team, out of 21 schools, at the Berry College Viking Open on Saturday. Beth Burgess paced the team with her 33rd place finish and 6k time of 24:49.47. Covenant was competing against schools ranging from NCAA Division I to the NAIA in the event.

150: The two-day score of James Van Nice at the Maryville College Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The sophomore earned a third place finish individually to lead Covenant to second place in the event. Van Nice posted a 78 in round one before tying for the low round with a 72 in the final day.


The men's golf team begins the NCCAA Men's Golf Championships today in Panama City Beach, Fla. ... The men's soccer team was shutout at Huntingdon last Wednesday for the fourth time this season ... Men's soccer hosts non-conference foe Emory on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ... The cross country teams are off until November 2 when they compete in the USA South Championships ... Basketball practices began this week for both Covenant teams ... Men's basketball was picked seventh in the USA South, while the women were selected 10th
