Scots Weekly: Stats and Notes (Sept. 16-21)

Scots Weekly: Stats and Notes (Sept. 16-21)

Conference play began in earnest this week for Covenant athletic teams. Women's soccer came away with a pair of victories and men's soccer captured one conference and non-conference win. Volleyball competed against a tough schedule that included a highly-ranked team while cross country had the week off.

BY THE NUMBERS:

2-0: The deficit facing the volleyball team in Saturday's match against Emory & Henry. The Lady Scots rallied to win the final three sets for a 3-2 victory. It was the second time this season that Covenant has won a match after trailing by two sets (Aug. 31 vs. Oglethorpe).

5: The number of personal single-match career-highs in volleyball's 3-2 win over Emory & Henry. Cora Schroeder and Hannah Rogers each had career-highs in kills with 19 and 15, respectively. Mariah Corney (25), Stephanie Kirkpatrick (23) and Jaclyn Stuart (13) all had career-highs in digs.

Nov. 18, 2011: The last time the women's soccer team won an overtime match before Saturday's 2-1 extra time win over Ferrum. Anna Porch had the game-winning goal just a couple minutes into the first overtime period, her first collegiate score, to give the Lady Scots their first OT win since a 2-1 victory over Trevecca Nazarene in the 2011 NCCAA Mid-East Region tournament.

4: The number of assists for Ruth Terry in two conference matches over the weekend. The sophomore was the catalyst for the women's soccer team as she had assists on both game-winning goals in Friday's 4-0 win and Saturday's 2-1 victory. Terry had one assist all of last season.

2: The number of goals each scored by Joel Friesen and Michael Arango on the week. Friesen had scores against Birmingham Southern and the game-winner at Ferrum to go along with two assists. Arango netted his first two collegiate goals and had the game-winner in Tuesday's 2-1 win over previously unbeaten Birmingham Southern.

1-1: Covenant's record against ranked opponents this week. Men's soccer knocked off D3Soccer.com's No. 22-ranked Birmingham Southern 2-1 on Tuesday at home. Volleyball fell to AVCA's No. 4-ranked Emory 3-0 on Saturday.

NOTES:

Women's soccer garnered Covenant's first USA South victory in any sport with a 4-0 win at Greensboro on Friday... Women's soccer is also 2-0 in conference play after two road wins over the weekend. Covenant plays five of its next six USA South matches at home... Covenant will celebrate its entrance into NCAA Division III before Tuesday night's volleyball match vs. Piedmont beginning with a tailgate cookout at 5:00 in the Great Hall and prizes will be given out during the match... Men's soccer goes out-of-conference for a match with Oglethorpe on Wednesday before going back into USA South play at LaGrange on Saturday... Cross country is back in action on Saturday in the Greensboro XC Invitational
