A new feature this year on here will be a weekly glance at various stats and notes from the week that was. Covenant fall sports began in earnest over the weekend as cross country, men's and women's soccer, and volleyball all got underway. It was a successful weekend as well as Scots teams won all but one contest.
BY THE NUMBERS:
1: The number of career goals by women's soccer sophomore Rachel Bernard and men's soccer sophomore Gordon Carpenter as both notched their first goal over the weekend. Bernard's came late in the first half and was the deciding score in Covenant's 1-0 win over Guilford on Saturday. Carpenter capped the scoring with a goal in the 71st minute of the Scots' 4-0 win over Tennessee Temple on Friday night.
2: The number of career coaching wins for head volleyball coach Joanna Ehman. The first year coach got her first two wins on Saturday as her team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to Oglethorpe for a five-set victory before defeating Wesleyan 3-0.
43: Number of assists for volleyball junior setter Stephanie Kirkpatrick in Saturday's 3-2 win over Oglethorpe. It marked the fifth time in her career that she registered 40 or more assists in a single match.
6: The number of top 10 finishers for the men's cross country team in Friday's Scots Opener victory. Stephen Dillon (2nd), Justin Jantomaso (3rd), Matt Gorter (4th), Jack Williams (7th), Caleb Spykstra (8th) and Zach Smith (9th) all ran inside the top 10.
7: The number of women's cross country runners to place in the top 10 in the Scots Opener on Friday. Covenant also had five runners inside the top six as they nearly pulled off a perfect team score. The finishers were: Spookie Eaves (1st), Beth Burgess (2nd), Esther Anderson (3rd), Anna Hankal (5th), Grace Bodron (6th), Ruthie Cargill (8th) and Natalie Barkmann (9th).
The volleyball team has now won nine straight home matches dating back to October 9, 2012... Men's soccer head coach Nathan Pifer notched career coaching win No. 244 with Covenant's 4-0 win over Tennessee Temple on Friday. The record includes only matches from Pifer's coaching career at four-year college men's programs... The cross country victories marked the second year in a row that Covenant has bested Maryville in the Scots Opener meets
