WOODBRIDGE, Va. -- Gabrielle (Gabby) Powell, a senior at Woodbridge Senior High School has committed to attend Covenant College. By accepting the enrollment offer, Powell has expressed her intent to become a full-time student and play soccer for the Lady Scots and head coach Mark Duble in the fall of 2013.
As a member of the soccer team at Woodbridge over the past four seasons, Powell has helped the varsity team win a District Championship (So.) and now serves as a varsity team co-captain in her senior season. As a starting midfielder, she has helped her team to a first place ranking in the district after the regular season. Powell also played USL soccer for DC Elite where, in 2011, she competed with her team at Nationals in Boise, Idaho and finished in second place.
Powell became a student at Woodbridge Senior High School after she was accepted into their Creative Writing Program. She is currently co-editor of the school newspaper. Powell is also a published poet and received an honorable mention in a national poetry contest. During her time at Woodbridge, she has consistently been listed on the academic honor roll each year for maintaining a GPA above 3.5.
Powell would like to major in Community Development. She is specifically interested in urban studies. When asked about what most excites her about Covenant, Powell said, "Being around so many people that love God and desire to grow in their relationship with him really excites me. I am also really looking forward to playing soccer with a team of girls who share the same love for the Lord as I do."
Duble believes that "Gabby has great vision on the field and a very good awareness of where her teammates are when she has the ball at her feet. Her ability to send someone through for a scoring opportunity and her desire to follow up in the attack will be great assets for us in the upcoming season."
Duble, along with the rest of the Covenant women's soccer coaching staff and team, are pleased to have Gabby Powell join the Lady Scots for the 2013 season.
