MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- Katelyn Newsome's team-leading ninth goal of the year came at the perfect time for the Covenant women's soccer team. Newsome found the back of the net in the 89th minute of play to break a 1-1 tie and give Covenant a 2-1 win over Berry on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, Covenant moves to 15-4-1 for the season and will now wait and see who they will face in the first round of the NCCAA Mid-East Region tournament on November 16. It also puts the Lady Scots just one win away from tying a school-record for victories set back in 2004.
Kara Lee opened up the scoring for the Lady Scots right before halftime in the 44th minute. Lee took the shot from roughly 25 yards out for the senior's third goal of the season.
Berry (4-10-2) got the equalizer in the 76th minute as Cori Jackson received a pass from Molly Johnson and deposited it into the net.
But it was Newsome and the Lady Scots that would strike at the right time. Covenant began a counter-attack and Newsome was able to finish from 15 yards out to give the Lady Scots the victory.
Berry outshot the Lady Scots 12-9, with a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Newsome and Ruth Terry each took three shots for Covenant, while Lee added two. Wagner tallied four shots for the Vikings.
Covenant keeper Hannah Bales made three saves, while Berry's Blair Shupenko tallied just two.
The Lady Scots will have a few weeks off before they begin play in the NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament. Check athletics.covenant.edu for the most up-to-date information regarding who and when Covenant will play.
