WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Tarryn Bundy's unassisted goal in the 62nd minute of action gave the Salem College Spirits enough offense to overcome the Covenant Lady Scots 1-0 on Tuesday evening in Winston-Salem.
The loss for Covenant is its first conference defeat of the season and drops the Lady Scots to 11-3-1 on the year. Salem improves to 12-3 and 6-1 in league play.
These two teams met on September 29 at Scotland Yard in a similar, defensive battle that saw Covenant eke out a 1-0 victory. On this day it was Salem that got the one score needed to win.
Bundy's score came after a couple of missed shots from the Lady Scots and proved to be just enough. Covenant outshot the Spirits 12-7 with a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Lady Scots also had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Covenant appeared to have tied the score in the 65th minute. Katelyn Newsome took a corner kick and played it short to Ally Jennings who quickly passed it back to Newsome. Newsome played the ball towards the end line and then crossed it into the box where Bethany Logan headed the ball in. However, the goal was negated after the official called the ball out of bounds right before Newsome's cross.
Ketchum made seven saves for the Spirits.
Covenant returns home on Saturday to take on GSAC member Wesleyan College at 5:00 p.m. Annual Senior Night activities will take place on this night.
