LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Hannah Monday posted a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds, but the Covenant women's basketball team could not hold an eight-point halftime lead in a 56-48 loss to Huntingdon on Friday evening inside Barnes PE Center.
Covenant drops to 8-14 overall and 5-8 inside the USA South, while Huntingdon goes to 11-12 on the year and 10-4 in league play.
Monday was all over the floor recording her 18 points on 9-of-14 from the field to go along with 11 rebounds, three blocks, and two assists. It was Monday's third double-double of the season.
Covenant led 29-21 at halftime after a stellar second quarter. The Scots outscored the visiting Hawks, 15-6, in the period to erase a one-point deficit and take an eight-point lead into halftime. A Monday jumper with 7:12 left in the quarter gave Covenant an 18-17 lead and kick-started an 11-3 scoring run. Kirsch drained a 3-pointer to cap the run and give the Scots a 27-20 lead.
Huntingdon turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and rallied back. The Hawks outscored Covenant 21-7 in the third quarter to grab the lead for good.
Shaonica Thomas scored 13 of her game-high 26 points over the final two quarters as Huntingdon clamped down defensively. The Hawks scored 20 points off Covenant turnovers in the final two quarters and would lead by as many as 13 late in the contest.
Thomas finished with 26 points and eight rebounds to lead Huntingdon. The Hawks were limited to 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the field, but had 19 offensive rebounds and hit 14-of-21 at the foul line.
Covenant made 40.8 percent (20-of-49) for the game.
