Women's Hoops Can't Keep Pace in Loss to Berea

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- A hot start for the Covenant women's basketball team kept them within striking distance, but visiting Berea used a strong second half to secure a 100-58 victory over the Scots on Tuesday night inside Barnes PE Center.

Covenant drops to 6-11 overall and 3-5 inside the USA South. Berea, winners of 11 straight games, remains atop the USA South West Division at 9-0 and 16-2 on the year.

Hannah Monday led Covenant with 17 points to go with four rebounds and three assists, while Ruthie Moore totaled 16 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Cosette Kirsch dropped eight assists and collected eight rebounds along with scoring five points. Margo Koby, Michaela Price, and Riley Wagaman all had six points each.

The Scots shot 53.6 percent in the opening two quarters, including 60 percent in the first, to stay in the game. Covenant fell behind 12-2 in the opening three minutes, but responded to get within five (25-20) after a Wagaman steal eventually led to a Monday three-point play with 1:42 left in the first. 

Berea, which came into the contest averaging the second-most points in the USA South at 76.0 per game, pushed the margin to 30-22 at the end of the opening period. The visiting Mountaineers took a 48-37 lead into halftime.

Over the final two periods, Berea was efficient on offense and pulled away for good. The Mountaineers hit eight 3-pointers in the second half and scored 52 points in the final 20 minutes to seal the win.

Destiny Combs led Berea with 21 points, while Aaliyah Hampton and Leah Parker had 18 points each. Parker hit four of Berea's 12 3-pointers on the night. Bailee Vanover added 10 points and Nakeisha Greene had a game-high nine rebounds.

Covenant ended the night shooting 39.1 percent (25-of-64) from the field with five triples. As a team, the Scots dished out 16 assists on those 25 made field goals.

Berea connected on 46.9 percent (38-of-81) and 12-of-16 at the free throw line. The Mountaineers held a 51-32 edge in rebounding and recorded 24 second-chance points on 21 offensive rebounds.
