Maryville Pulls Away from Women's Hoops Late

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's basketball team battled with Maryville, but a late run in the fourth quarter propelled the visitors to a 57-43 victory over the Scots on Saturday afternoon inside Barnes PE Center.

Covenant drops to 5-9 overall and 2-3 in USA South play, while Maryville improves to 11-4 on the year and 4-2 in the USA South.

It was a tightly contested game through three quarters as the teams traded leads seven times. Maryville clung to a 37-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter and then held Covenant scoreless for the first six-and-a-half minutes in the final period to take a 47-34 lead with 3:30 left. Covenant would get as close as eight points the rest of the way.

Hannah Monday led all scorers with 15 points to go along with six rebounds for Covenant. Cosette Kirsch added 11 points and six assists, while Ruthie Moore totaled six points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Margo Koby chipped in eight points and six steals.

Covenant shot 33.3 percent (19-of-57) for the game. The Scots forced Maryville into 20 turnovers and produced 19 points from those. 

Covenant took an early 4-0 lead after a pair of baskets from Monday. The teams traded leads throughout the first period and into the second. Covenant regained the lead on a Monday layup to make it 14-13 with 8:43 left in the second period.

An Elissa Moore 3-pointer gave Covenant a 19-16 lead with 4:28 left in the second, but Maryville finished the half outscoring Covenant 13-6 to take a 29-25 lead into the break.

Both teams struggled to score in the third period as Covenant outscored the visiting Scots 9-8. A Kirsch conventional three-point play got Covenant within 33-32 with 2:43 left in the period, but could not regain the lead.

Maryville had three players in double-figure scoring led by Courtney Carruthers' 12 points, while Abbi Joseph and Klaire Varney had 11 apiece. Kelley Wandell had a game-high 15 rebounds as Maryville held a 40-35 edge on the glass and totaled nine second-chance points.

Maryville shot 39.3 percent (24-of-62) from the field and was limited to five 3-pointers.

Covenant will travel to Montgomery, Ala., on Friday, Jan. 17 to face Huntingdon. Game time is set for 6 p.m. CST (7 p.m. EST).
