ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Covenant women's basketball team wrapped up play before Thanksgiving Break with an 80-58 loss at Oglethorpe on Tuesday night inside Dorough Field House.
Covenant drops to 2-5 overall. Oglethorpe, which is ranked No. 20 in the WBCA Top 25, goes to 6-1 on the year.
Four Covenant players scored in double figures led by Ruthie Moore's 15 points and six rebounds. Hannah Monday added 13 points with Cosette Kirsch tallying 12 points and Rachel Thomas 11. The Scots shot well from the field at 45.2 percent (19-of-42), including 6-of-15 from 3-point land and 14-of-21 at the free throw line.
Oglethorpe used a pressure defense to stymie the number of offensive opportunities the Scots had on the night. The host Stormy Petrels scored 33 points off Covenant turnovers and out-rebounded the Scots 46-26. It was the first time in seven games this season that the Scots have been out-rebounded.
Covenant led 6-2 early on as Moore and Monday hit 3-pointers. Oglethorpe used an 8-0 run and took the lead for good at 10-6 on a Savannah LeGate basket with 5:42 left in the first period. Covenant shot 54.5 percent (6-of-11) in the opening period, but trailed 22-15 as Oglethorpe connected on 52.6 percent (10-of-19).
The lead expanded for the Petrels in the second quarter as they outscored the Scots 24-10 to take a 46-25 lead entering halftime. Oglethorpe's lead never dipped below double-digits over the final two quarters.
Oglethorpe was led by Taylor Smith's double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Amy Vazquez was the only other Petrel on double-figure scoring as she posted 10 points off the bench. Oglethorpe finished the night shooting 42.7 percent (35-of-82) with five 3-pointers, while recording 23 second-chance points on 25 offensive rebounds.
Covenant will open USA South play on Wednesday, Dec. 4 against Agnes Scott inside Barnes PE Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
